Be a Scrutineer
As I'm sure you have heard, there will be a Referendum on October 19, 2026 with ten questions.
Question 10 will have two options.
Option 1 - Alberta should remain a province in Canada. and;
Option 2 - The Government of Alberta should commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada.
To date, this is the most important referendum Albertans will have to give the Government of Alberta clear instructions that freedom and opportunity is more important that accepting 2nd class citizenry by remaining in Canada and accepting the status quo.
Under current legislation only "official parties" may appoint scrutineers. Although The Independence Party of Alberta is a registered political party and has run candidates during other election periods, we are relegated to 2nd class citizens as the definition of an "Official Party" under the Referendum Regulation is a party that holds at least 4 seats in the Legislature.
Therefore TIP may not submit a list of names for scrutineers to Elections Alberta. It is my understanding from Elections Alberta that first choice for scrutineers appointed shall be taken from lists provided by the United Conservative Party and the NDP. Names submitted by Third Party Advertisers may be considered if there are not enough scrutineers submitted by the UCP and NDP.
With this in mind, it is critical that we have people to ensure the process cannot be corrupted by ill-intentioned scrutineers. I recommend to all members of TIP who are interested in being a scrutineer, click the button below so you can submit your name as a scrutineer.
The list of names for scrutineers must be submitted by an "Official Party" or Third Party Advertiser to Elections Alberta by August 24, 2026 so if you are interested, please act now.
Ron Robertson, Interim Leader
The Independence Party of Alberta
